University in the UK explained

Studying at a UK university as an international student has many advantages: it is a great opportunity to improve your English language skills, to enrich yourself by living in a different culture on your own and to increase your job prospects.

The British university system is vastly different than other european systems. In this article I will explain you in detail how British universities are structured, how to choose the best university for you and how to prepare your application.

How are British universities structured?

Once you have passed your final high school exams, if you want to undertake higher study you can either apply for a course at a college (offering university-level education combined with practical experience) or you can apply for a course at a university, offering degrees which are usually three years long (four in Scotland) and that will award you, at the end of the course, a bachelor’s degree.

If you want to keep studying after your first degree, you can apply for a postgraduate degree, where you will be studying to obtain a master, which can be followed by a doctorate to obtain a PhD.

How do I choose the right university for me?

There are more than 100 universities and colleges in England alone and with such a large choice, choosing the best course at the best university for you is not an easy task. First of all, you need to know that every university course only accept a given number of students: whether you will be accepted or refused will depend on your application and, most importantly, on your final grades at high school. For selected courses where an in-depth knowledge of a specific subject is required, the university might ask you for specific grades in that subject.

If your native language isn’t English, British universities will also require you to prove your English language skills. The IELTS certificate is widely accepted across the country, and generally universities require you to achieve a grade between 6 and 7.5 (out of 9). To find out which grades you need for the course you would like to apply to, visit the university’s website, find the course you are interested in and check the entry requirements section. You will most likely only find British grades, but as a general rule the Italian grade of 95/100 is equivalent to AAA, 90/100 is equivalent to AAB, 85/100 is equivalent to ABB and so on.

Now that you have established which courses you would like to apply for, you have to choose where you would like to study. The answer will vary according to your preferences and your needs: if you have a limited budget, the north of England is a great choice thanks to the lower cost of living; if you prefer living in a quiet area, it is best to avoid crowded cities such as London or Manchester.

University rankings are very important in the UK: each year every university in the country is ranked based on various factors such as facilities, quality of research and teaching. The higher a university is ranked, the better it will look on your CV.

How do I prepare my application?

First of all, you should familiarise yourself with the UCAS website (University and Colleges Admissions Service): this portal works as an intermediary between the applicants and universities.

Once you have created an account, you will have a number of sections to fill out:

  • Personal details: Here you will have to provide your contact details, your education history and state any qualifications you might have;
  • Course choices: Here you will have to list your course choice preferences. You can apply to up to five courses, which do not have to be from the same university. At this stage you are not required to order them by preference. You can apply to courses in different subjects (for example, you can choose to study English Literature in London and History in Birmingham), but it is recommended to apply to subjects in the same area (humanities, sciences etc) because you can only write one personal statement;
  • Personal statement: This is the most important section of your application. You will be asked to write a 4000 characters (or 47 lines) long letter in which you need to convince the university you are the ideal candidate for the course you have chosen. There are plenty of resources and examples online to help you write your statement;
  • Reference: This section has to be filled by one of your teachers. You can ask a reference from the teacher of the subject you have chosen or alternatively you can ask your English teacher if you are an international student. Your teacher is also required to state your predicted grade (unless you have already completed high school);
  • Fees: Finally, you will be asked to pay an application fee. The cost is currently £20 if you only apply for one course, or £25 or if you apply to more than one course.

Applications are open from mid-September and the deadline is on 15th January. There are some exceptions to this rule: if you would like to study at either Oxford or Cambridge University (you can’t apply for both), or if you want to study medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or science, the deadline is on 15th October.

What happens next?

You should start hearing back from universities from March. You could get one of these three answers:

  • Conditional: Your place is put on hold and will be confirmed once you have met all the entry requirements;
  • Unconditional: You meet all the entry requirements and your place is confirmed;
  • Unsuccessful: Your application has been rejected.

Once you have received an answer from the universities you will be asked to select your firm choice (the course you most want to attend) and your insurance choice (your backup choice should you not meet the entry requirements for your firm choice).

If you pass your final exams and you achieve the grades asked by your university, the status of your offer will automatically change from conditional to unconditional: this change usually takes place in August when British students receive their A Level results. Now that you have your confirmation you can prepare your application for a room in university halls and start planning your move!

How can I finance my studies?

British university courses are considerably more expensive than other european universities: in 2019/2020, one year can cost up to £9250 for UK and EU students. For international students (except EU students) the cost of one year starts at £10,000.

The vast majority of British and European students apply for a loan from Student Finance, which will cover the fees for the entirety of the course. You will start repaying your fees in monthly instalments after graduation as long as you are earning at least £21,000 per year. If you are earning less, you won’t be asked to pay.

What is the CSCS card and how to apply?

Lavoratori con elmetto in una azienda

The CSCS card (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) is a card attributed to construction workers to demonstrate that they have received adequate training and qualifications to work properly. It was introduced to improve standards and safety on construction sites.

Finding work without this card is not impossible: it is not mandatory. However, most large companies do not hire employees without a CSCS card, so we advise you to request it if you intend to work in this sector in England. Let’s find out how to get it together.

What types of CSCS card are there ?

There is no a unique type of CSCS card: depending on the specific work you do in construction (architect, construction engineer, bricklayer, etc.) you will need to request the CSCS card corresponding to your activity. On this site you will find all the existing categories: click on the one you are interested in to find out what are the qualifications necessary to obtain it. If you are not sure which card you need, you can use the card finder to find out which card suits your skills or qualifications.

Some of the categories are:

  • Laborer: You can receive this card if you have achieved the RQF Level 1 / SCQF Level 4 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment or the SCQF Level 5 REHIS Elementary Health and Safety Certificate. Visit this site to find out where these certificates can be obtained. The card you will receive will be valid for five years;
  • Trainee: You can receive this card if you are currently studying to obtain a certificate. You must have already completed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test Operative Level in the past two years. This temporary card is valid for five years but cannot be renewed;
  • Skilled Worker: this card is for those who have already obtained an NVQ or SVQ Lelev 2 certificate, or an apprenticeship in the construction sector. This card is valid for five years.

With the exception of the trainee card, all others are renewable. There is also the possibility of requesting the card for a higher role if you progress in your work.

Types of CSCS Card

How do I apply for a card?

The application is made online on the official CSCS website. Make sure you have all the necessary certificates before submitting your application. In addition to the certifications you will be asked to pass the CITB Health Safety and Environment (HS&E) Test: currently the cost is £ 21; starting from April 1st 2020 the cost will be £ 21.50. This is a 50-question test to test your knowledge of workplace safety regulations. Also in this case there are different types of tests depending on your work.

Now that you have all the documents available, let’s find out what you need to send the application to obtain the CSCS card:

  • A scanned copy of your certificates, or a document demonstrating your enrollment in a qualified course for which you will receive a certificate;
  • The Test ID Number of the HS&E test shown on the certificate;
  • Indicate the type of HS&E test achieved;
  • Make sure that the personal data shown on the HS&E certificate is correct;
  • Have a checking account to make a £ 36 payment.

Alternatively, you can call 0344 99 44 777 to request the CSCS card. Make sure you have access to an email account during the call.

Once your request is accepted, the card will be shipped the next day and you will receive it in less than a week.

Watching your favorite TV channels abroad is possible thanks to the power of VPNs. Find out how now!

How to prepare for the HS&E test?

Passing the CITB Health Safety and Environment (HS&E) test is essential in order to receive your CSCS card. At the time of application, your certificate must be less than two years old. You can use the card finder to know which type of test you need to pass.

On the CITB online shop you will find a series of books to help you study for the test. The main book with all the information is the Health, Safety and Environment Test for Operatives and Specialist: make sure you have the most recent copy at the time of purchase. The books are exclusively in English, but the smartphone application (available for iOS and Android) is available in 14 languages.

The exam is carried out on a touch screen computer in a center recognized by the CIBT. During the exam it is possible to receive assistance in different languages.

Can an employer apply for a card for his employees?

If you are an employer, you can request the CSCS card for all your employees yourself. After creating an employer account on the CSCS website you will need:

  • Send a scanned copy of the certificate of all your employees, or a document showing that your employees are in the process of obtaining a recognized qualification:
  • Send the test ID number of the HS&E certificate of each employee;
  • Know the type of paper your employees require;
  • Communicate the personal data of each employee.

This application (multiple questions) can only be done online. For this reason you will have to communicate an email address for each of your employees, and you will need to have a current account to make the payment (£ 36 per card).

Renew or replace the card

To renew the CSCS card, just go to the CSCS website where, once logged in to your account, you can request a renewal. You will again be required to demonstrate that you have the necessary qualifications and to declare any changes in your work. The card can be renewed six months before or after the expiry date.

In the event of loss or theft, or if your card is broken, you just need to log in to your account and request a new one. Alternatively you can call +44 (0) 344 994 4777, making sure you have your CSCS registration number on hand or, alternatively, your National Insurance number.

I have my own qualification, can I do the conversion?

The answer is yes. On the NARIC (National Academic Recognition Information Center) website you can convert and certify your documents, to be attached later in your application to receive the CSCS card.

How to watch TV abroad on mobile and PC

Come vedere il calcio all'estero

How to watch TV abroad on mobile phone and PC?

This is the first question we ask ourselves when we enter our first home in our new house abroad, we sit on the sofa in the room, we see the TV on a side of the room and suddenly we think: “how can I watch TV channels from abroad? How can I see my favorite series? how can I watch football games?”

Just because you are out of your country doesn’t mean you have to abandon your roots and only watch local TV. In fact, there is a solution that allows you to continue watching your favorite channels even if you are living in a country away from your home. I am not talking about those websites that you find on the net every now and then and which promise to give you exceptional video quality without succeeding. In fact, it is really difficult to find a free streaming website whose videos do not stop every a few seconds.

Click me

The solution I am talking about is a service that allows you to watch TV channels directly from the broadcaster’s website. So exceptional quality and service are maintained.

This is easily accessible through a VPN service provider which helps users bypass geographical restrictions.

Our step by step travel guide has been developed to help you do all the necessary things you need when you move to the UK

Here is how you can get your favourite TV channels abroad on PC, Mac, Android, Apple TV, Smart TV and iOS operating systems by using a VPN abroad.

How can I see my favorite channels if I live abroad?

The giants of world television encrypt the signal of their TV making it possible to view their channels only if you are within your national borders. So what we have to do is make the TV broadcasters believe that you are in your country.

No sooner said than done. There is a small application you need to install on your mobile phone or computer that will allow you to be as if you were at home in your country. It is called VPN (Virtual Private Network)

Before accessing your favorite channel then, you must start the application and select your country. From this moment on, all data will be redirected to your country and will therefore result as if you were physically sitting in the armchair a home. In doing so, the various national TV sites will believe that you are in your country by granting you access to their channels. Using a VPN service also allows you to take advantage of a secure connection and anonymous when you surf the Internet.

Wise is one of the best online banks and has over 6 million customers across the world

All you have to do is identify the VPN service you like best – our choice falls on three excellent services – ExpressVPN in the first place, the best VPN in the world and PureVPN a definitely cheaper choice – below – create an account (you will have a trial period during which you can evaluate the service) and choose your local IP.

VPN services:

In this article we have seen how it is possible to watch your TV channels abroad simply by using a VPN service. Remember that if you use a television at home, you may be asked to pay the English licence. Visit the official website for more information.

If you need some further information on VPNs and how to activate them, write a comment in the comments below.

Transports in London: the London tube

  • Orario: I costi variano a seconda dell’orario.

  • Contactless Card: Da pochi anni è possibile pagare i viaggi giornalieri, “Pay as you go”, cioè con una carta di credito o debito contactless.
Scopri tutti i dettagli su come effettuare l’iscrizione

Knowing Brighton

Brighton molo principale

Dreaming of moving to an English multicultural and full of opportunities city, but don’t want to give up the sea?

Living in Brighton is the ideal choice for many: just less than an hour distance from London, it is a full-sized town which offers all the benefits of a large city: Brighton has two universities, large multinational companies such as American Express for those looking for job opportunities and many independent shops of all kinds for shopping lovers.

Brighton and nearby Hove together form the Unitary authority of Brighton and Hove, recognised as a city in 2001 and which today has almost 300,000 inhabitants. The city is located in the county of East Sussex, in the south east of England, and is a stone’s throw from the South Downs national park.

The coastal town is famous for its non-conformism: known for its large LGBT community, Brighton is an extravagant city with a myriad of independent shops and bars, where the lifestyle is much more relaxed than the capital; it is precisely for this latter point that more and more people working in London decide to choose Brighton as their residence.

Brighton lungo mare

Brighton seafront

How to get to Brighton

The most convenient airport is certainly Gatwick, located halfway between Brighton and London, and half an hour away by train from the coastal town. You can possibly consider other London airports such as Heathrow, Luton and Stansted, and from there to reach Brighton via London by train, or by taking a bus (National Express is the best known and often very cheap company).

The bus will take you to Old Steine, a stone’s throw from the sea, while the train station is located in the heart of the city: in both cases you will not be far from the bus stops that will take you to your destination. To find out which bus to take, you can download the Brighton & Hove Buses app on your mobile phone, which will also allow you to check timetables and buy your ticket online.

Transportation in and around Brighton

Staying on the subject of public transport, it is important to know the costs of the various passes. The car parks in the city center are few and very expensive, so the inhabitants very often prefer public transport. As indicated above, the Brighton bus company has a smartphone app through which you can buy tickets for single use, passes for a full day, for a week, for a month and for 90 days. Prices vary widely depending on the company you use, your destination and time (buses cost more at night), but in general the price for a monthly ticket is around £ 80. There are reduced rates for university students and special tickets for groups and families; you can find a list with all rates on this site.

As indicated above, Brighton offers a much calmer and more relaxed quality of life than London, and for this reason many people decide to live in Brighton while working in the capital. However, the peace of the sea has a cost: the monthly season ticket costs almost £ 400. The train will not only take you to London: Brighton is also well connected to the east (Lewes, Eastbourne) and to the west (Shoreham, Worthing, Littlehampton).

Is it possible to visit London in one day? We tried and we did it. Here is how

Do not forget the bicycle, one of the most economical and ecological methods of getting around the city: most of the main roads in Brighton have a lane dedicated to cyclists. For those who do not have one, Brighton offers the possibility to rent one of their bicycles through the BTN BikeShare Scheme: prices are 3p per minute (plus one pound to ‘unlock’ the bicycle) or £ 72 per year, for thirty minutes a day.

The rents

As you may have understood from the costs of transport, living in Brighton is not cheap, but the most important cost is rent. Although not at London levels, rents in Brighton are among the most expensive in the United Kingdom: on average it counts £ 500 for a room in a shared house, £ 700 for a studio apartment and £ 800 for a one bedroom flat, to which you will have to add bills and council tax.

While not a big city, Brighton has very different neighborhoods, and prices vary according to your requirements. If you prefer calm, but with the sea at your doorstep, the Hove area will do it for you; if you prefer green instead, Preston Park is also a very calm and pretty area. The Hanover neighborhood, located to the east of Brighton, is famous for its colorful houses and is highly appreciated by both students and families. The center is, without a doubt, the liveliest and most expensive neighborhood.

On Facebook you can find many groups of people living in Brighton and you will often find information on available rooms, roommates with whom to share an apartment and furniture and furnishings for sale.

Working in Brighton

As everywhere in England, in order to work you will first need to apply for the National Insurance Number, and write a CV in the British format. Knowledge of the English language is essential; finding work without it is almost impossible. The predominant sector is tourism: in the summer jobs in restaurants and hotels are in great demand, all jobs which involve contact with the public.

Many jobs, especially in large chains such as supermarkets and clothing stores, do not accept paper CVs: if you are interested in working in this sector you can search for jobs and apply directly on the company’s website.

In case you don’t have a specific job in mind, or are simply looking for a job to improve your knowledge of the language, there are many websites and places in the city where you will find ads and help in your search. If you are looking for help in person, you can go to the Job Center on Edward Street or to one of the many recruitment agencies scattered throughout the city.

Study in Brighton

Brighton is a popular destination for students from all over the world, both for attending university studies and for learning or improving their English. For those who wish to attend higher studies, you can choose between the University of Brighton and the University of Sussex: both universities offer three-year courses, masters and doctorates in almost all subjects. Although not located in the heart of Brighton, they are well connected to the center by bus and train. For music lovers, the British and Irish Modern Music Institute (BIMM) has a college in Brighton.

For those interested in a short stay to attend English language courses, Brighton offers several language schools. Some of the most popular are:

Where to eat in Brighton

There is no shortage of good food in Brighton. On the waterfront and almost everywhere in the city you will find vendors of the famous fish and chips, one of the inevitable dishes of every British coastal city. In the most central neighborhoods, in particular North Laine, The Lanes and Kemptown, you will find numerous cafes where you can taste fresh, local and homemade dishes, with many vegetarian and vegan options. An inevitable place for burger lovers is Burger Brothers, a place that at first glance looks like a classic fast food shop, but which is very often described as one of the best places in the city.

If you are a lover of Italian food, you will not feel lost: the city offers numerous pizzerias and clubs where you can taste aperitifs and local specialties.

The best known pizzerias in Brighton are:

  • VIP Pizza (19 Old Steine BN1 1EL) ;
  • Fatto a Mano (77 London Road BN1 4JF, 25 Gloucester Road BN1 4AQ, 65-67 Church Road BN3 2BD);
  • Purezza (12 St James’s St BN2 1RE);
  • Nuposto (14 West Street BN1 2RE);
  • Al Duomo (7 Pavilion Buildings BN1 1EE).

For those looking for something other than pizza there are:

  • Franco’s Osteria (4 Victoria Terrace BN3 2WE);
  • Monjibello – aperitifs and Sicilian cuisine (24 Duke Street BN1 1AG);
  • Grazie Mille – breakfast, lunch and appetizers (169 North Street BN1 1EA);
  • La Mucca Nera – ice cream shop and aperitifs (107 St James’s Street BN2 1TH).

For everyday shopping, in Brighton you will find all traditional supermarkets (Tesco, Asda, Aldi etc.). There are also several independent foods such as Infinity Foods and Hisbe, specializing in local, seasonal and vegetarian / vegan foods, and for fresh and cheap vegetables and fruit you can go to the Open Market, open from Monday to Sunday.

Shopping in Brighton

Brighton is also very well equipped in this category: with a shopping center in the city center and two pedestrian zones plenty of original and independent shops, it is impossible to go home empty-handed.

The Churchill Square shopping center is a five-minute walk from the station and consists of three floors where you will find clothing stores (Topshop, Urban Outfitters, Victoria’s Secret), home stores (Lakeland, Tiger), restaurants and various types of fast foods (mostly located on the top floor).

If more traditional shops aren’t your thing, head to North Laine and The Lanes neighborhoods, both located in the heart of the city. In North Laine, Snooper’s Paradise is a must, a two-storey store with many vintage items of any kind, where you can get lost for hours. In the Lanes you will find above all jewelers, luxury clothing stores and restaurants.

Art and culture

Brighton has an important music scene: many internationally famous bands and artists, such as The Kooks and Fatboy Slim, are originally from this city. Emerging singers and bands often perform in pubs, such as Prince Albert on Trafalgar Street and The Hope and Ruin on Queen’s Road. The main concert halls in the city are Komedia, Concorde 2, the Brighton Dome and the Brighton Center.

Two major cultural events are organized in Brighton each year, the Brighton Fringe and the Brighton Festival. The two events often take place simultaneously and last from early May until early June. Brighton Fringe is England’s largest art festival and one of the largest in the world, with more than 1000 events in hundreds of different locations. The Brighton Festival, created in 1967, is a celebration of music, art, theater, literature, with events suitable for all members of the family, from the largest to the smallest.

If you are in Brighton the first week of August, you cannot miss the Brighton Pride, one of the most important events of the year, with almost 500,000 visitors from all over the world. The event takes place from Friday to Sunday, with the traditional parade on Saturday. In recent years, Brighton Pride has launched a music festival, Pride in the Park in Preston park, which recently welcomed international artists such as Britney Spears and Kylie Minogue.

Monuments and places to visit

Like almost all seaside cities, Brighton has a pier, the Palace Pier, an emblematic symbol of the city and one of the most famous piers in the United Kingdom. 525m long, on this pier you will find restaurants, a games room, a funfair, and you can admire Brighton and its beaches. In reality Brighton has two docks: heading west you can see the skeleton of the West Pier, disused for several decades and ruined by two fires in 2003. Along the coast there is also the British Airways i360, a tower 162m high from which you can admire Brighton and its surroundings.

Another emblematic building is the Royal Pavilion, built under George IV in Indian (external) and Chinese (internal) style. You can visit the palace by paying a fee while the garden that surrounds it is free. Very close from the Royal Pavilion you will find the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery; the museum tells the history of the city and you can often visit exhibitions on various themes. Other museums of the city are the Brighton Toy and Model Museum, located at the station, and the Sea Life Center, an aquarium located close to the Palace Pier.
